Cruise Port IJmuiden

IJmuiden Cruise Port — Your Complete Shore Day Guide

Most cruise passengers arriving at IJmuiden already have one destination in mind: Amsterdam. And Amsterdam is magnificent. But IJmuiden deserves more credit than it usually gets. It’s a proper working port town — a North Sea fishing harbour with one of Europe’s largest fish auctions, dramatic sea locks, wide sandy beaches backed by dunes, and direct bus connections to one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful historic cities, Haarlem, about an hour away.

This guide covers everything you need for a good day ashore — from the terminal itself to the bus connections, what to do if you stay local, and how to reach Amsterdam, Haarlem, or Keukenhof without stress.

Not on a cruise ship? IJmuiden is also the Dutch end of the daily DFDS ferry from Newcastle, which docks at a separate terminal on the inner harbour. If that is your crossing, start with arriving at IJmuiden by ferry — the terminal, the timings and the transport are all different.

Getting Ashore — Practical Information

The IJmuiden cruise terminal is located on the Averijhaven, at the entrance to the North Sea Canal. The terminal itself is modern and functional — well-staffed on cruise days, with clear signage for all transport options.

Getting to Amsterdam, Haarlem & Beyond

IJmuiden is 25 km from Amsterdam city centre. Transport options range from the independent bus + train route (cheapest) to the cruise line shuttle (most convenient). Here’s how each option works.

The bus + Train (Independent — Recommended)

The bus departs from directly outside the terminal and runs to Haarlem Centraal station in about an hour. From Haarlem, Intercity trains run every 15 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal — journey time 15 minutes. Total transfer: roughly 60 to 75 minutes, costing around €5–7 per person each way. Buy an OV-chipkaart or single tickets at Haarlem station.

Prefer to stay in Haarlem? The bus delivers you directly to a beautiful historic city with world-class museums, excellent restaurants, and almost none of Amsterdam’s crowds. More on that below.

Cruise Line Shuttle Bus

Most cruise lines operating IJmuiden offer a paid shuttle to Amsterdam Centraal on port days — typically €15–25 per person return. The shuttle is the most hassle-free option: direct, timed to the ship’s schedule, and drops you at Centraal. Check with your ship’s shore excursion desk the evening before arrival. Sells out on busy days — book as soon as it opens.

Taxi or Rideshare

Taxis queue at the terminal on cruise days. A taxi to Amsterdam city centre costs approximately €65–80 and takes 35–45 minutes. For a group of 4, a taxi can be cost-competitive with the shuttle. Uber and Bolt both operate from IJmuiden — book via app before disembarking for shortest wait times.

Taxi to Haarlem: approximately €30–40, about 25 minutes.
Taxi to Keukenhof (spring only): approximately €55–65, 30 minutes.

Return Journey — Critical Timing Note

Allow at least 90 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal or Haarlem station back to being on board. This covers the bus/train transfer, terminal check-in, and a reasonable buffer. Check your all-aboard time carefully — it’s different from the departure time, and the ship will not wait.

Things to Do — Three Shore Day Options

Option 1: Amsterdam (Most Popular)

The default choice — and a very good one if it’s your first visit. Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, canal ring, and market culture are all excellent. Note: the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, and Van Gogh Museum all require timed-entry tickets booked in advance. Do not arrive expecting to buy tickets at the door in peak season.

Option 2: Haarlem (Highly Recommended — Direct Bus)

The bus drops you at Haarlem Centraal in about an hour — no train change, no connection. Haarlem’s medieval Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum, the Teylers Museum (the Netherlands’ oldest, dating to 1784), and the canal ring are all within 10 minutes’ walk of the station. Far less crowded than Amsterdam. One of the best-kept secrets for IJmuiden passengers.

Option 3: Keukenhof (Spring — March to May)

IJmuiden is actually the closest of the three Dutch cruise ports to Keukenhof — just 28 km away, approximately 30 minutes by taxi. The world’s most famous flower garden is open for just 8 weeks each year. If your cruise calls at IJmuiden during tulip season, this should be your first choice. Tickets must be pre-booked online — no walk-up entry at the gate.

Option 4: Stay Local — IJmuiden Itself

If you’ve already seen Amsterdam, or simply want a completely different experience, IJmuiden itself is more rewarding than most passengers expect. The sea locks are an engineering marvel — three of the world’s largest, capable of passing ocean-going vessels. The fish auction area along the harbour has fresh fish stalls serving kibbeling and smoked eel from mid-morning. The North Sea beach is wide, clean, and backed by dunes — a 20-minute walk from the terminal. And the national park dune landscape (Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland) stretches south from the beach.

Hotels Near IJmuiden Cruise Terminal

Most cruise passengers arriving a night early or extending their stay choose to base themselves in Haarlem or Amsterdam. Both are easy to reach from the terminal on embarkation morning, and offer far more in the way of atmosphere, restaurants, and things to do. A handful of hotels exist in IJmuiden itself for passengers who prefer to minimise transfer time.

Van der Valk Hotel IJmuiden

The best hotel option directly in IJmuiden — comfortable rooms, on-site restaurant, and easy road access to both the terminal and the beach. A practical, reliable choice for a pre-cruise night with minimal travel the next morning.

Staying in Haarlem

Haarlem is about an hour from the terminal by bus — straightforward even on embarkation morning with luggage. The Carlton Square Hotel and Stempels Hotel (in a converted printing house) are both excellent options in the historic centre. Haarlem is a genuinely enjoyable place to spend an evening before your cruise.

Staying in Amsterdam

Amsterdam offers the widest range of accommodation at every price point. Allow 60–75 minutes on embarkation morning to travel from central Amsterdam to the IJmuiden terminal by bus and train. The Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam (Piet Heinkade) is the closest major hotel to the PTA and well-positioned for both the city and the terminal transfer.

Eat & Drink Near the Terminal

Harbour Fish Stalls

The fish market area along the IJmuiden harbour — a 15-minute walk from the terminal — is the best place in the Netherlands to eat kibbeling (battered fried North Sea fish) and gerookte paling (smoked eel). The fish arrives daily from the auction. Eat from a paper cone standing on the harbourside — it’s authentic, affordable, and one of the best food experiences available on any Dutch shore day.

Beach Restaurants (Strand IJmuiden Boulevard)

The beachfront boulevard has several café-restaurants serving fresh North Sea fish, Dutch seafood platters, and standard Dutch café menus. A good option for a relaxed lunch if you’re spending your day locally rather than heading to Amsterdam. Tables outside from April through September on most days.

FAQ — IJmuiden Cruise Port

Is IJmuiden the same as Amsterdam cruise port?

IJmuiden is one of two terminals serving Amsterdam. Larger ships dock at IJmuiden (Averijhaven); smaller vessels use the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) in the city centre. If your itinerary says “Amsterdam (IJmuiden)” or “Amsterdam (Averijhaven)” — you’re at IJmuiden. If it just says “Amsterdam” — check with your cruise line to confirm the terminal.

How long does it take to get from IJmuiden to Amsterdam?

By bus and train (the bus to Haarlem + Intercity to Amsterdam Centraal): roughly 60 to 75 minutes. By taxi or Uber: 35–45 minutes. By cruise line shuttle: 40–50 minutes. Budget 90 minutes total from ship to central Amsterdam to allow for connections and any delays.

Is there a free shuttle from IJmuiden to Amsterdam?

No independent free shuttle exists. Cruise lines provide paid shuttles (typically €15–25 return per person). The most affordable independent option is the bus to Haarlem then a train to Amsterdam — approximately €5–7 each way per person.

What is there to do in IJmuiden without going to Amsterdam?

More than most passengers expect. The sea locks are genuinely impressive; the harbour fish market is excellent for fresh kibbeling and smoked eel; the North Sea beach is wide and clean; and the national park dune landscape is worth exploring on foot or by bike. Haarlem is also only 35 minutes away by bus — and a strong alternative to Amsterdam for passengers who’ve already visited.

What time should I be back at the IJmuiden terminal?

Allow at least 90 minutes from wherever you are to being back on board. Add an extra 30 minutes buffer on busy port days when the bus and the Haarlem–Amsterdam train can be crowded. Check your all-aboard time with the ship — this is different from the published departure time.
