If you’re lucky enough to have a cruise calling at Rotterdam, Amsterdam or IJmuiden between late March and mid-May, you’re arriving at the most spectacular time of year in the Netherlands. Spring in Holland means tulips — millions upon millions of them — flooding the bulb fields of the Bollenstreek in waves of red, yellow, pink, and purple that stretch to the horizon. It’s one of the great natural spectacles of Europe, and it’s completely accessible on a cruise shore day.
Here’s everything you need to know about experiencing tulip season in the Netherlands as a cruise passenger — including which port gives you the best access, when to go, and how to book the key experiences before they sell out.
When Is Tulip Season in the Netherlands?
Dutch tulip season typically runs from mid-March to mid-May, with the absolute peak usually falling in the second and third weeks of April. Exact timing varies year to year depending on temperature — a cold spring delays the bloom, a warm one advances it.
The key dates to know for 2027:
- Keukenhof Gardens open: 18 March – 9 May 2027, daily 08:00–19:00 (last entry 18:15)
- Peak tulip bloom: Typically 5–25 April
- Bollenstreek fields: Best from late March through early May
- Flower Parade (Bloemencorso): Saturday 17 April 2027 (Noordwijk to Haarlem)
Keukenhof: The World’s Most Famous Tulip Garden
Keukenhof is the centrepiece of Dutch spring — 32 hectares of meticulously planted gardens containing over seven million flowering bulbs. It’s only open for eight weeks a year, making a cruise visit during tulip season a genuinely rare opportunity.
The gardens feature themed pavilions, sculpture exhibitions, a working windmill, and the famous Keukenhof Canal Cruise — a 45-minute electric boat tour along the tulip fields that borders the gardens. The combination of gardens and canal cruise is the definitive Keukenhof experience.
⚠️ Book ahead: Keukenhof operates timed-entry ticketing that regularly sells out, especially on weekends in April. Book tickets as soon as your cruise itinerary is confirmed.
Getting to Keukenhof from Each Port
From Amsterdam (PTA): The most popular option. Keukenhof shuttle buses run from Amsterdam Centraal station — journey time approximately 40 minutes. Alternatively, train to Leiden or Schiphol with connecting bus. Tour packages including transport and entry are the easiest option for cruise passengers. Read our dedicated guide: Keukenhof from Amsterdam Cruise Port.
From IJmuiden: Taxi to Keukenhof takes 45 minutes to an hour and costs €50–65. The bus to Haarlem then connecting bus is slower but cheaper. See our IJmuiden guide for full transport options.
From Rotterdam: Keukenhof is about 65km from the port, which used to make it an awkward shore day. It no longer is. A coach leaves the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal itself at 08:30 with your Keukenhof ticket included and has you back by 15:30, and there is an earlier return laid on for Holland America Line departures. We have worked out which 2027 cruise calls can make it and at what time — see our Keukenhof tour from Rotterdam Cruise Terminal page.
The Bollenstreek: Tulip Fields Beyond Keukenhof
The real spectacle of Dutch spring isn’t just Keukenhof — it’s the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region), the stretch of flat Dutch countryside between Leiden and Haarlem where commercial flower growers produce the bulbs that supply the world. Cycling through the Bollenstreek in full bloom is an otherworldly experience — a sea of colour stretching to every horizon.
The best base for exploring the bulb fields by bike is Lisse (where Keukenhof is located) or Hillegom. Bike rental is available near Keukenhof and in Haarlem, which is accessible from IJmuiden by bus.
The Bloemencorso — Netherlands Flower Parade
The Bloemencorso Bollenstreek is the Netherlands’ most spectacular annual event — a 42km flower parade of elaborately decorated floats made entirely from tulips, dahlias, and other flowers, running from Noordwijk to Haarlem. In 2027 it takes place on Saturday 17 April. If your cruise calls at any Dutch port on those dates, attending the parade is an unforgettable experience that requires no booking — simply position yourself along the route in Lisse, Hillegom, or Haarlem.
Other Spring Highlights Beyond Tulips
Spring cruising in the Netherlands offers more than just flowers. April and May bring:
- King’s Day (Koningsdag) — 27 April: The Netherlands’ biggest street party, with Amsterdam transformed into a city-wide orange festival and outdoor market. An extraordinary experience if your ship is in port.
- Liberation Day — 5 May: Commemorations, free concerts, and a relaxed celebratory atmosphere across Dutch cities.
- Longer daylight hours: April evenings give you until 9pm of daylight, extending your shore day significantly.
Spring Shore Day Tips
- Book all timed-entry tickets (Keukenhof, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank) as soon as your cruise confirms port calls — spring is peak season and everything fills up.
- April weather in the Netherlands is changeable — sunshine and showers often occur the same day. Pack a waterproof and dress in layers.
- Keukenhof on a weekday is significantly less crowded than a weekend — check if your port day falls on a weekday and take advantage.
- The bulb fields are at their best in the morning light — aim to be in the Bollenstreek between 8–11am for the best photography conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit Keukenhof on a cruise shore day?
Yes — from all three Dutch cruise ports. Amsterdam and IJmuiden are the easy ones, and Rotterdam now has a coach leaving the cruise terminal itself, so a return trip with 2–3 hours in the gardens fits comfortably inside a standard 8–10 hour shore day. The one thing to check is your ship’s departure time: on short calls the timing is tight, which is why we list every 2027 Rotterdam call and whether it makes the tour. Book transport and timed entry in advance either way.
When exactly do the tulips bloom in the Netherlands?
Peak bloom is usually in the second and third weeks of April, but can range from early April to early May depending on the weather. The Keukenhof website publishes a free weekly Flower Forecast during the season — check it before your cruise for real-time bloom status.
What if my cruise arrives outside tulip season?
The Netherlands has year-round appeal — summer brings long days, outdoor festivals, and warm terrace culture. Late summer sees the famous Flower Parade in Zundert (September). Autumn brings dramatic skies and quieter museums. See our year-round guide: The Dutch Cruise Experience.
