Rotterdam doesn’t ease you in gently. Step off the ship and you’re already standing in one of Europe’s most architecturally ambitious cities, with the Erasmus Bridge visible from the terminal and the Markthal a 15-minute walk away. Most cruise ports drop you at the edge of a city. Rotterdam puts you in the middle of it. This guide covers everything you need for a good day ashore — from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal to the trams, the best places to eat, and where to park if you drove to the port.
Getting Ashore — Practical Information
The Rotterdam Cruise Terminal sits on Wilhelminapier, in the Kop van Zuid waterfront district on the south bank of the Maas. Metro, tram and water taxi connections are within a 5-minute walk.

Getting into the City
Public transport in Rotterdam is frequent, cheap and easy to navigate. The metro is the fastest option; the tram runs along the waterfront; and the water taxi is worth it at least once for the views alone.
Metro (Fastest option)
Wilhelminaplein metro station is a 3-minute walk from the terminal. Take line D or E toward Rotterdam Centraal — you’ll be at Beurs station in the city centre in about 5 minutes. Pay by contactless bank card at the gate, or buy a single ticket (approx. €3) at the machine. A day card covering all bus, tram and metro across greater Rotterdam costs €13.00 and is available online.
One thing to know: contactless debit cards work fine everywhere. Credit cards are not accepted on trams — only on metro gates and at ticket machines.
Tram
Tram lines 23 and 25 stop at the crossing just left of the terminal exit. Board toward Centraal Station and get off at Beurs or Stadhuis for the city centre. Single ticket approx. €3, bought from the driver. The same day card as the metro applies here too.
Taxi
There’s a taxi desk inside the terminal with English-speaking drivers and fixed-price journeys into the city. No meter — agree the price before you go. Good option if you’re travelling with heavy luggage or limited mobility.
On Foot
The terminal is genuinely within walking distance of the main sights. The Erasmus Bridge is 5 minutes on foot, the Cube Houses and Markthal around 15 minutes, and the Lijnbaan shopping street about 20 minutes. Follow the waterfront north from the terminal for the best route.
Water Taxi
The water taxi stop is in front of Hotel New York, a 5-minute walk from the terminal along the waterfront. A single trip costs around €5 per person. It’s a practical way to reach spots further along the Maas, and the views of the Rotterdam skyline from the water are worth the fare.
💡Rotterdam Day travel card (bus, tram and metro): approx. €13.00. Valid for the whole day across the greater Rotterdam network.
Parking
Driving to the port? The Kop van Zuid waterfront district has three car parks within walking distance of the terminal. On busy turnaround days the Wilhelminapier fills up — reserve a space online before you travel.
ss Rotterdam (embarkation/disembarkation only)
Long-stay parking for passengers boarding a cruise. Around €13–15 per 24 hours with a free shuttle to the terminal. No reservation needed; show your boarding pass at the entrance. Visit cruise parking website for more information.
📍 3e Katendrechtsehoofd 25, Rotterdam
Q-Park De Rotterdam (closest — 1 minute walk)
This is the closest car park to the terminal, located in the base of the De Rotterdam building on Wilhelminakade. It has 659 spaces, runs 24/7 and uses a licence plate recognition system so there’s no ticket to lose. The day rate runs to around €30–35 depending on how long you stay. Book via the Q-Park website to lock in a better rate.
📍 Wilhelminakade 300 · Max. height 2.00m / 6’7″
Interparking World Port Center (5 min walk, next to Hotel New York)
Situated at the far end of Wilhelminapier next to Hotel New York, this is the larger and generally cheaper of the two main options, with 500 spaces and 60 EV charging points. Entry is possible until 23:30; exit is 24 hours. Book online via Interparking and you can save up to 50% on the walk-up rate. The 1.90m height limit catches some larger SUVs and vans — check before you book.
📍 Wilhelminakade 981 · Max. height 1.90m / 6’3″ · Approx. €3.95/hr, max day rate €29
Things to Do in Rotterdam
Rotterdam has more going for it on a shore day than most passengers expect. The city centre is 5 minutes from the terminal by metro, Kinderdijk is 45 minutes by waterbus, and Delft is reachable in under an hour by train. Below are the highlights worth knowing about.
In the City — On Foot or by Metro
Markthal is the easiest first stop — free to enter, 15 minutes on foot from the terminal, and genuinely worth seeing for the building alone. The 11,000 m² ceiling mural covers the entire interior of the horseshoe-shaped arch. Around 100 food stalls inside make it a good spot for lunch. The Cube Houses are visible from the market square outside; the Show Cube interior costs around €3.50.
The Erasmus Bridge is 5 minutes on foot from the terminal along the waterfront. Walking across takes about 10 minutes and gives the best views of the Wilhelminapier skyline and the working port to the west.
For a view over the whole city, the Euromast observation tower reaches 185 metres. It’s about 2.5 km from the terminal — take tram 23 or 25 from Wilhelminaplein and alight at the Euromast stop. Book tickets in advance to avoid queuing.
Rotterdam Harbor Cruise — Spido
One of the most popular things to do on a Rotterdam shore day. The 75-minute boat tour departs from the Veerhaven, just across the Erasmus Bridge, and runs past the working container port and back along the waterfront. It’s one of the best ways to understand the scale of Europe’s largest port from the water.
Kinderdijk — Day Trip by Waterbus
Kinderdijk’s 19 windmills are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited day trip from Rotterdam. The waterbus departs every 30 minutes from the stop south of the Erasmus Bridge, a 10-minute walk from the terminal. Journey time is around 45 minutes. Allow at least 4 hours for the full round trip.
Day Trips by Train
Rotterdam Centraal is 8 minutes from the terminal by metro. From there, direct trains reach Delft in 15 minutes, Amsterdam in 40 minutes, and Leiden in around 35 minutes. All three are worth the journey if you have a full day ashore.
Hotels Near the Cruise Terminal
Arriving the night before or staying on after your cruise? The Wilhelminapier has three hotels within a short walk of the terminal — each one a different take on what Rotterdam does best.

Hotel New York ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The building was the headquarters of the Holland America Line from 1873 until the 1970s. Thousands of emigrants left for America from this exact spot on the Maas. Today it’s a four-star hotel with a waterfront restaurant, a well-stocked bar in the basement, and a large terrace facing the river. The rooms are smaller than modern hotels but the location and atmosphere are unlike anything else on the Wilhelminapier.
📍 Koninginnenhoofd 1 — 5 min walk from terminal

nhow Rotterdam ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The nhow occupies the lower floors of De Rotterdam — the triple-tower building designed by Rem Koolhaas that dominates the Wilhelminapier skyline. Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows; the rooftop bar on the 7th floor has some of the best views in the city. It’s the most convenient option for the terminal, and the design is genuinely worth seeing even if you’re not staying.
📍 Wilhelminakade 137 — 2 min walk from terminal

Room Mate Bruno ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A four-storey boutique hotel in a converted spice warehouse on Wilhelminakade. The interior mixes original industrial detailing with bold colour — it’s compact, well-priced for the location, and puts you right in the middle of the Wilhelminapier restaurant strip.
📍 Wilhelminakade 52-58 — 3 min walk from terminal
Booking tip: If you’re joining a cruise, book the night before — boarding usually starts around noon and an early check-out gives you time to drop luggage at the terminal before exploring. All three hotels are bookable on Booking.com.
Eat & Drink Near the Terminal
The stretch of waterfront between the Cruise Terminal and the Erasmus Bridge has changed considerably in the past decade. What used to be a quiet office district is now one of Rotterdam’s better places to eat and drink, with a range that runs from a 15-stand food hall to a rooftop cocktail bar with river views.
Happy Italy
Terrace on the Maas directly beside the Erasmus Bridge. Good for a pre-cruise dinner or a quick lunch — large portions, straightforward Italian menu, reliable kitchen. Popular with locals on weekend evenings so worth booking ahead. visit website
Foodhallen Rotterdam
Fifteen food stands inside a converted tea warehouse on Wilhelminakade, 5 minutes from the terminal. The warehouse belonged to the Dutch East India Company in an earlier life. Now it covers most cuisines — Vietnamese, Indonesian, BBQ, burgers, dim sum — plus a full bar with local Rotterdam craft beers. Good for groups where everyone wants something different. visit website
NY Basement
Cocktail bar in the basement of Hotel New York. The building’s history shows in the details — original tiling, brass fittings, low lighting. The cocktail list is longer than most, and the bartenders know what they’re doing. Get there early on Friday and Saturday evenings. visit website
nhow Rooftop Bar (Elvy)
Seventh floor terrace at the nhow hotel, open for lunch and dinner. The view takes in the full width of the Maas and the Rotterdam skyline in both directions. Worth a visit even if you just stop for one drink before heading back to the ship. visit website
