How Long Do Ships Stay in Amsterdam?
Most cruise ships at the Amsterdam PTA dock for 8–12 hours, giving you a comfortable full day ashore. A few patterns worth knowing:
- Morning arrivals (06:00–08:00) — Standard for most ships. You’ll have the full day to explore Amsterdam.
- Evening departures (18:00–23:00) — The most generous shore time. Enough for a full city day plus an early dinner.
- Overnight stays — Occasional. Check your specific itinerary. Some Viking and Star Pride calls stay 24+ hours.
- Late arrivals — P&O’s Ventura regularly arrives in the late afternoon (17:15), giving a short evening ashore rather than a full day.
Make the Most of Your Time Ashore
The PTA is 10 minutes on foot from Amsterdam Centraal station — one of the best-positioned cruise terminals in Europe. Here’s what’s realistic based on how long you have:
- 6–8 hours (06:00–14:00 or similar) — Canal ring walk, one pre-booked museum (Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh), lunch at the Albert Cuyp Market or Jordaan. No time for day trips.
- 10–12 hours (06:00–17:00 or 18:00) — Full city day. Two museums if pre-booked, canal boat tour, time in the Jordaan. Or a half-day at Keukenhof (spring only) plus afternoon in the city.
- Full day + evening (06:00–23:00) — Amsterdam in depth. Museums, markets, canal districts, and dinner at one of the city’s excellent restaurants before returning to the ship.

Amsterdam PTA vs IJmuiden — Which Terminal Is My Ship Using?
Amsterdam has two cruise terminals. Smaller ships (typically under 300m) dock at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) on Piet Heinkade — this page. Larger ships use the Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden, 25km from the city centre. If your itinerary says “Amsterdam (IJmuiden)” or “Amsterdam (Averijhaven)”, you’re using IJmuiden.
